The Integral Urban House remained in operation for over a decade – a respectable lifespan for a grassroots experiment in alternative living. As time wore on, the IUH confronted multiple operational problems and eventually had to close. Sometimes these large items get moved around and aren’t always put back safely. Many of these plants were saved from the landfill or dropped off by customers!
The front, side, and back yards of the house had a wide variety of plants and fruit trees so that the house could provide a great deal of its overall food for its residents and for the animals. Alfalfa trees were planted in the front yard next to the front driveway as a source of protein for rabbits that were kept in back of the house. In order to preserve the soil below the driveway and to prevent any stormwater from picking up pollutants before reaching storm drains, the ground surface in front of the house had a woodchip driveway in lieu of a conventional asphalt, concrete, or brick driveway. The side yard in front of the main entrance along the south-facing wall grew strawberries, asparagus, artichokes, culinary herbs, and rhubarb for the house's residents, as well as chrysanthemums and comfrey to feed to chickens and rabbits. The backyard of the house had a 2,500 square foot vegetable garden which provided a majority of the food that was grown at the house.

Fresh air entered the composting chamber through ducts in its trap door, causing the material to lose 95% of its bulk as carbon dioxide and water vapor, which were vented to the outside. For cooler winter months, a greenhouse was attached to the southwest corner of the house’s ground floor to raise tomatoes and cucumbers. The greenhouse also doubled as a source of solar heating for inside the house, with insulated curtains provided to retain heat on colder winter nights. In addition to the yards surrounding the house and the greenhouse, a "roof-top garden" on the main floor porch overlooking the backyard had containers filled with compost to grow tea mints and salad greens. In order to store the large amounts of vegetables farmed at the house, a cooler room located near the center of the ground floor was used for vegetable storage and egg storage. Elements of the home included a vegetable garden, chickens, rabbits, a fish pond, beehives, a composting toilet, solar power and more. The founders were California State Architect Sim Van der Ryn and Bill & Helga Olkowski, authors of the City People's Guide to Raising Food, and the project was run by the Farallones Institute, which was also founded by Van der Ryn and Bill and Helga Olkowski.
An electric heater can only be an electric heater, and a garbage truck can only be a garbage truck. However, a window admits light, provides a view, may be a place to sit, and can also be a solar collector. An attached greenhouse can be a solar collector and storage system, a place to grow seedlings and winter vegetables, the location for a hot tub. A garden or planting boxes, however small–together with a composting bucket–take the place of the smelly garbage can and the noisy garbage truck . And, besides processing waste nutrients, provide a source of beauty, food, and flowers and can be the focus of many pleasurable leisure hours. Throughout the course, case studies will provide a real-world perspective on community development and how practitioners are working to create healthy and economically vibrant communities for all.
On the weekdays, the house could be booked for private tours by schools and other organizations. A self-guided tour booklet by Helga Olkowski gave homesteading tips and further references. As a pedagogical tool, these tours not only oriented visitors to the IUH, but also provided them with the knowledge needed to replicate the resource-saving design features in their own homes. As a “living laboratory,” the Integral Urban House was more than a site of experiments in sustainable design. It was also a public showcase for systems and practices of urban self-reliance that never before had been attempted at such a scale and in such detail.
